China

Japan invaded China in 1937. Japanese military leaders wanted China's natural resources. The Chinese fight to stop Japanese expansion in their country started a war in the Pacific. This regional war became a world war when Japan attacked the US naval base at Pearl Harbor. Japan, Germany, and Italy declared war on the United States in 1941.
