Goal: Students will gain insight into the far-reaching effects of the 1836 Treaty of the Cedars for the Menominee and settlers.
Objectives:
1) Students will read the text of a historic document.
2) Students will make observations about the terms of the treaty in questions 1, 2, and 3.
3) Students will be able to name two things the Menominee gave up and one thing they received through this treaty.
4) Students will synthesize information in the document and background information to answer questions 4 and 5.
5) Students will analyze the fairness of the treaty incorporating their own opinions in question 6.
Read the text of the 1836 Treaty of the Cedars and answer the following questions.
1) What are the natural boundaries (e.g. rivers, lakes, etc.) that are used to determine and/or describe the tract of land that the Menominee ceded to the U.S. Government?
2) What did the Government give the Menominee in exchange for the tract of 4 million acres of land? How long would the annual payments last?
3) What else did the Menominee give up as a part of this treaty? (See Article 3)
4) Do you think there was much contact between the Menominee and European or American settlers? What evidence in the treaty supports your answer?
5) Look at the list of people who signed the treaty. Why do you think that many of the Menominee who signed did so with a mark rather than with their signature? What might your answer mean about how well the treaty was understood by both parties?
6) Do you think the treaty was fair? Why or why not?
