The Outagamie County Historical Society/History Museum at the Castle offers two School Days programs each year, one in the fall and one in the spring. These programs each consist of hands-on activities and demonstrations in which your students can participate to learn about life in the past.
The Fall School Days – Home and Harvest program focuses on a better understanding of the 19th century, highlighting home and harvest activities in Wisconsin from 1800–1860. Visiting students experience 20 different demonstrations and activities, including spinning, candle dipping, butter making, quill writing, corn shelling and 19th-century games.
The Spring School Days – Fur Trade focuses on a better understanding of fur trading activities in Wisconsin from 1630-1850. Visiting students experience 20 varied demonstrations and activities, such as trading, orienteering, open-fire cooking, portaging, fur trade recordkeeping, voyageur clothing and American Indian games.
The events are held outdoors. Your students and required chaperones will spend approximately 40 minutes in each of three areas of demonstrations and activities, rotating to the next activity or area when our area coordinators signal the groups to do so. Your small groups will be assigned a starting area and activity. A day’s morning or afternoon activities will be canceled due to severe weather, and your money will be refunded.
Each year, approximately 3,200 area 2nd-5th graders enjoy these fun-filled and educational programs.
