McCarthy's
motorcade stopped at St. John Catholic Church in Little Chute,

McCarthy's
health deteriorated after his censure, worsened by alcohol abuse. He died
on May 2, 1957, from acute hepatitis at the age of 48 in Bethesda, Maryland.
The Marines greeted McCarthy's body at Austin Straubel Airport in Green
Bay and escorted it by motorcade to St. Mary Catholic Church in Appleton.
An estimated 30,000 people filed through the church to visit McCarthy's
body. After a requiem mass, McCarthy's wife, Jean, buried McCarthy near
his parents in St. Mary cemetery in Appleton.

Appleton
Mayor Robert L. Roemer asked that all public offices, schools, and
businesses close on the day of McCarthy's funeral as a tribute to
the Senator.

Twenty-one
senators came to McCarthy's Appleton funeral including Strom Thurmond,
Everett Dirksen, and Barry Goldwater. A loyal friend and former assistant,
Robert Kennedy, also attended.
