History on the move!
Join the History Museum for a fun series of walking tours focusing on local history. There is no better way to explore our region than learning about the past and present in this interactive series.
Pre-registration for all tours is required. All tours start in front of the museum (330 E College Ave) at 6:00 PM unless otherwise specified. Each tour lasts approximately 1-1.5 hours at a moderate pace.
2021 Walking Tours
June 30: Edna Ferber's Appleton
Celebrate the life of Edna Ferber as we trace her steps to discover important Edna Ferber sites and what life was like in Appleton around 1900.
July 21: Jewish Cemetery Tour
Take a stroll through historic Moses Montefiore and Zion Cemeteries as we learn about Appleton's Jewish history from the 1700s to the present, as well as Jewish traditions and customs.
Meet at the main entrance of the Moses Montefiore Cemetery and park near the corner of East Woodland Avenue and Willow Court.
August 11: Riverwalk Trail
Join the History Museum as we explore Appleton's growth as a hydroelectric city during the second half of the 19th century through industry and innovation along the Fox River.
Meet in the Edison Center parking lot (101 W Edison Avenue, Appleton) near the Edison Center sign at the corner of S Olde Oneida Street and W Edison Avenue.
September 1: Historic Pierce Park Neighborhood Tour
Take a stroll through the neighborhood surrounding Pierce Park as we explore some of Appleton's most prominent residents and the architectural styles of their homes.
Meet at the entrance to Pierce Park at the corner of S Pierce Avenue and W Prospect Ave.
September 22: Prohibition Pub Crawl
It has been over 100 years since Prohibition began. Put on your walking shoes for a pub crawl of downtown Appleton's historic taverns to learn how these businesses and Appleton residents responded to this new law.
Price does not include drinks.
October 16: Secrets in the Stones Cemetery Tour
Discover the story behind some of the stones in Riverside Cemetery. This tour will cover tales of the original pioneer cemetery, glimpses of Appleton's past, unique Riverside stories, and tombstone symbols and icons.
Meet at the main entrance of Riverside Cemetery (714 N Owaissa Street)
October 20: Spiritualists and Hauntings
Do you believe in ghosts? Take a journey of hauntings, seances, and downright creepy unexplained events. We will visit a spooky office tower, talk about a haunted building that is now a popular brewery, and possibly catch a glimpse of Charlie, Irving, or Madam Lottie. Not for the faint of heart.
November 10: Castle Curious
Have you ever wanted to know more about our Castle? Discover secret symbols, peep holes, and how this historic building was used by the Freemasons. This tour will take place in the History Museum at the Castle.
Our walking tours are also available for private groups. Just gather 10 or more people and contact our Education and Collections manager to inquire about availability.
