Allies invade Normandy in "Operation Overlord." American,

US's long range B-29 "Superfortress" bombers attack the
Japanese mainland for the first time. |

The
US wins the battle of the Philippine Sea, also called "The Great
Marianas Turkey Shoot." Japanese forces lose nearly 300 aircraft
and two aircraft carriers. The battle effectively destroys the Japanese
naval air force. |

Roosevelt signs the "GI Bill." The Bill provides veterans
with loans for school, home ownership, and small business. |

Tojo resigns as Prime Minister of Japan. The Japanese military loses

Conspirators

German
troops counterattack American forces in Belgium in the "Battle
of the Bulge." Americans stop the German advance on December
24 and end the battle on January 27, 1945. |
