Lawrence University Faculty

Twelve Lawrence professors left the College to serve in the armed forces. They include:

  • Warren Beck, Professor of English, taught at the GI University in Shrivenham, England.
  • Andrew Berry, Professor of Mathematics, worked as an operations analyst for the Air Force.
  • Thomas Lynn Beyer, Assistant Professor of English, and Thomas Hamilton, Assistant Professor of Government, became officers in the Navy.
  • M.M. Bober, Professor of Economics, consulted with the Office of Price Administration.
  • Theodore Cloak, Professor of Drama, worked for the Office of Strategic Services.
  • Frank Fischer, Assistant Professor of English, and Jose de Onis, Assistant Professor of Spanish, joined the Army.
  • Dr. Ralph Landis, the college physician, served in the Army Medical Corps.
  • William Read, Professor of Geology, worked with the Naval Operations Research Group.
  • Howard Troyer, Professor of English, acted as official historian for the Office of Scientific Research and Development.
  • Gerhard Willecke, Professor of Physics, became a civilian physicist with the Air Force.
