Research and Collections
Policy Use

We are happy to help researchers by allowing them to use our facilities.  Research fees are charged per research session.

Because of the delicacy and importance of our collections, we require your cooperation to safeguard them. Research is an important part of the mission of the History Museum, and we are excited that you will join us in the acquiring and dissemination of historical information about our area.

1. Since all History Museum collections are kept in locked storage facilities, requests to see materials must be made with a curator in advance to allow for scheduling. All History Museum collections are non-circulating and certain collections carry donor restrictions that may limit their use.

2. All History Museum collections must be used in the Reading Room under the supervision of History Museum staff. Notify the curator or library assistant before leaving the building. If you wish to continue your research at a later date, please notify us before leaving.

3. Only pencils or lap-top computers may be used in taking research notes; no ball-point pens, fountain pens, or ink bottles. NEVER mark materials, even with a pencil. Do not lean on historical material and do not take notes on top of historic materials.

4. When handling photographs always wear the white cotton gloves that History Museum staff will provide.

5. Printed materials may be copied at the fee of 25 cents per page, if copyright provisions allow and if copying can be done without damage to the materials.

6. Photographic reproduction of images is done by the History Museum staff upon written order. Ask for a copy of "Photographic Reproduction Fees" form.

7. To reproduce photographs in publications or for commercial display permission must be obtained from a curator. There is a per-image fee. Ask for a copy of Photographic Reproduction Fees form and the "Photographic Commercial Use" form.

8. All Images or other materials for publication must be approved by an History Museum curator using a credit such as:
"Courtesy of the History Museum, Appleton, WI 54911"

9. Under special circumstances History Museum staff may be contracted to carry out your research for you. Ask for the Research Policy and Contract form.
